[Crowds gathering at the gates of Whitehall Palace, London]
Vishniac traveled from Holland to France, via England, as a freelance photographer. He spent several weeks in London creating an extensive body of work organized into categories: London Types; London Life; Navy and Army; Trafalgar Square; London Port; London Towers; and Cannons. One often-reproduced image of a man walking across Westminster Bridge, with Big Ben, the British Houses of Parliament, and the Palace of Westminster in the background, was featured on the cover of a large calendar, “Forever England,” and became a popular tourist photo.
