[Woman washing windows above Nachfolger Mandtler & Neumann Speditionen (Mandtler & Neumann Forwarding Agents), Ferdinandstrasse, Leopoldstadt, Vienna]
Located in Leopoldstadt, a district of Vienna heavily populated by Jewish immigrants from eastern Europe, the signs on the company’s facade advertise transportation, shipping, cargo, and customs services to eastern and central Europe. Vishniac’s train journeys to eastern Europe in the mid- to late 1930s originated in Berlin and usually included a stopover in Vienna, where he often spent a day or two documenting the surrounding neighborhood of Leopoldstadt, which was located near the Ostbahnhof, a train station that provided the majority of eastward-bound connections from Austria’s capital.
