Vishniac’s first monograph included an elegiac introduction by rabbi and philosopher Abraham Joshua Heschel, adapted from a lecture given by him in 1945 at the Jewish Theological Seminary, and featured 31 photographs of Jewish life in Eastern Europe before World War II.
