Vishniac’s friend, author and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel, wrote the forward to the photographer’s seminal publication A Vanished World, observing that “this astonishing man’s eyes seem to pierce our memory, to sift its shadows...a supreme witness, Vishniac evokes with sorrow and with love this picturesque world he has seen engulfed by fire and darkness.”
