Roman Vishniac’s son Wolf was eighteen years old when he arrived in New York Harbor on the S.S. Siboney, the American Export Lines Steamer that brought the Vishniac family, including Roman, Luta, Mara, and more than 80 other European Jewish refugees to safety on American shores. Departing Lisbon on December 20, 1940, the ship arrived on December 31, 1940. Other passengers on the S.S. Siboney included Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and Jean Renoir.
